The abolition of the teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI) effective 2012 will save the government RM40mil annually.

Deputy Education Minister Dr Puad Zarkashi said this was recouped from the allowance given to the teachers asked to teach the three subjects.

He said they had to buy books and attend English classes to upgrade their command of the language but, ultimately, the programme still failed.

As such, he reasoned, it was best to use the allocation to translate into Bahasa Melayu the books that could strengthen the students’ learning skills.

“We have experts at the Malaysian National Institute of Translation (ITNM) who can do this,” he added.

Some 61,040 teachers in primary schools and 26,389 teachers in secondary schools teach Mathematics while 46,946 teachers in primary schools and 25,781 teachers in secondary schools teach Science.

Dr Puad said the government has allocated about RM5bil to strengthen the teaching of English in schools and would be recuriting 13,933 teachers.

  3. walau saya mengajar math..tp sy tak amik sbb ajatr math in bm jer…kalu ngajar math in bi mase di sek pedalaman…maknanya…objektif tak tercapai…budak tak paham apa…biar saya rugi duit..jnji saya puas hati budak paham apa yg kita ajar…..

  4. bukan xbaik ngajaq math dlm english tu, baik sbenaqnya…..once i was a prep student for furthering my study in the states, saya pny english awai awai dah hancuq dh, pasai pa, saya melayu, makan sambai belacan, memang susah nak terima la benda ni, tp, ini lingua franca dunia.amat penting untuk anak2 kita…saya setuju, tp kerajaan perlu buat perlaksanaan yg menyeluruh, bukan tangkap muat ja, yg teruk bukan hny murid/pelajar+guru+ibu bapa tetapi ni melibatkan masa depan negara.hancurkan negara, saya xstuju…klu anak anak kita xpaham apa yg diajaq, buat apa dibuat, guru yg ngajaq dlm bahasa melayu, tp soklan dlm english, bagi yg guru yg amek elaun tu, pikiaq2 la….haram tu, berdosa menganiaya orang…n i think there should be other option, if the school intended to use english in their lessons, they should go ahead. n for this kind of teacher should be appreciated for their dedication, give them some kind of gift like some kind of incentive or something, but need some recommendation from the department or something, yes, coz its a huge contribution, for the sake of the kids n our future…..
